Hand #1: Woody Moore Doubles Through Phil Ivey

Hand #1: Phil Hellmuth has the button in seat 3, Ivey raises from the small blind to about 240,000, and Moore moves all in from the big blind for 1.5 million. Ivey studies the stacks and ponders the situation for more than five minutes. He clearly appreciates the amount of history that is at stake tonight, and is taking his time.

Or, perhaps he has ace-queen, and is wondering whether it will continue to be unlucky for him on the World Poker Tour.

Ivey quietly says, "I call," and the crowd erupts to their feet. Moore shows AsKh, and he dominates Ivey's Ad9c, looking to double up here.

The flop comes 6h3s2h, and Moore retains the lead. The turn card is the Jh, and Ivey needs a nine on the river to bust Moore here.

The river card is the Qc, and there are a fair amount of cheers as Woody Moore doubles up to more than 3 million -- and the chip lead. One of his friends yells, "Woody's in town!"

Ivey takes the hit, dropping down to about 2.6 million, which puts him nearly tied with Scott Montgomery for second in chips.

    Hand #4: Scott Montgomery

Hand #4: Scott Montgomery has the button in seat 6, Ivey raises from middle position to 230,000, Montgomery reraises from the button to 660,000, and Ivey goes into the tank once again. He thinks for more than three minutes before he calls.

The flop comes 8d 7h 2c, Ivey checks, Montgomery bets 800,000, and Ivey studies him for about 30 seconds before he folds. Scott Montgomery takes the pot worth more than 1.3 million, moving into a solid second place.

    Phil Ivey's Rough Start

The first button round has been active for Phil Ivey. He played five out of six hands, winning two limped pots, and losing three larger pots. His chip lead is gone, and the pressure on him is increasing.

    -

What More Could You Ask For?

This final table is a real treat for poker fans both in the general audience and the die-hard fan corps. Along with Doyle Brunson and Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey and Hellmuth are the largest names in poker. I think everyone in the room has their fingers crossed for an Ivey vs. Hellmuth heads-up finale. We have a long way to go between now and then though. Whatever the end result, this final table is great for the game of poker.

    -

Hand #11: Nam Le Doubles Through Phil Hellmuth

Hand #11: Quinn Do has the button in seat 1, Nam Le completes from the small blind for 100,000, and Hellmuth checks his option. The flop comes Jd 6h 3d, Nam Le bets 140,000, and Hellmuth thinks for about 15 seconds before he calls. The turn card is the Kh, Nam Le bets 350,000, and Hellmuth says, "All in."

Nam Le immediately calls with Kc3c for two pair, and Hellmuth is not happy. Hellmuth shows Jh8c for a pair of jacks, and says, "I can't believe you caught a king." Hellmuth needs a jack on the river to bust Nam Le here.

The river card is the 10s, and Nam Le wins the pot with two pair, kings and threes, doubling up in chips. Hellmuth immediately gets up from the table to walk around a bit and cool off.
    -

Hand #21: Nam Le Takes a Pot Worth 1 Million

Hand #21: Woody Moore has the button in seat 5, Nam Le raises under the gun to 270,000, Hellmuth calls from middle position, and Ivey calls from the cutoff. The flop comes Ad10s3h, Nam Le bets 660,000, and Hellmuth and Ivey both fold. Nam Le takes the pot worth more than 1 million.

    -

Hand #26: Phil Hellmuth Eliminated in 6th Place ($229,820)

Hand #26: Phil Ivey has the button in seat 4, Hellmuth moves all in from the cutoff, and Moore quickly calls from the small blind with Ah Qd. Hellmuth shows Ad9s, and he's dominated as he faces potential elimination.

At different times, the crowd chants for either a queen or a nine.

The flop comes AcJs2h, bringing mixed results from the crowd. The turn card is the 7c, and Hellmuth needs a nine on the river to stay alive.

The river card is the Qc, and Woody Moore wins the pot with two pair, aces and queens.

Phil Hellmuth is eliminated in sixth place, earning $229,820. He is clearly disappointed, but it is enough for Hellmuth to cross the $10 million mark in career tournament earnings.

Hellmuth walks around the table to shake everyone's hand, and the audience gives him an appreciative standing ovation.
    -

Hand #41: Woody Moore Takes a Big Pot Against Nam Le

Hand #41: Phil Ivey has the button in seat 4, Nam Le raises from the cutoff to 240,000, Moore reraises from the small blind to 600,000, and Nam Le calls. Woody checks in the dark. The flop comes 10d9h4c, and Nam Le bets 400,000. Woody thinks for more than a minute before raising to 1 million. Nam Le goes into the tank for more than three minutes.

Nam Le finally rechecks his cards and picks them up as if he's about to fold. But as he does this, Woody Moore jumps up out of his seat and a friend of his lets out a (premature) celebratory cheer. Upon seeing this, Nam Le holds onto his cards to think for another minute or so.

Nam Le eventually folds, and Moore picks up the pot worth 2.15 million.

    False Alarm

While Nam was pondering his call on the last hand Woody ran over to his wife and whispered something in her ear. Nam started to mock fold and Woody's wife let out a yell of delight. This might have made Nam think that Woody was trying to make a move with a bluff. We'll never know (at least until the TV show airs) what Woody had because he mucked his cards facedown.
    -

Hand #51: Scott Montgomery Eliminated in 5th Place ($296,860)

Hand #51: Phil Ivey has the button in seat 4, Nam Le raises from the cutoff to 350,000, and Montgomery moves all in from the big blind for 800,000. Nam Le thinks for about 10 seconds before he calls with KdJd. Montgomery shows Jc8s, and he's dominated as he faces elimination.

The flop comes 7d5c5s, and Nam Le retains the lead with king high. The turn card is the 3s, and Montgomery needs an eight on the river to stay alive.

The river card double pairs the board with the 3c, and Nam Le wins the pot with the two pair on the board and his king kicker.

Scott Montgomery is eliminated in fifth place, earning $296,860. The next player to bust will earn $411,770 for fourth place.

    Cruise Control

Phil Ivey has been uncharacteristically quiet during the last stretch of play. Ivey is never without a plan at the poker table though, so we will keep an eye on what develops. He could also be catching a run of cold cards.
    -

Hand #53: Phil Ivey Wins a Pot Worth 3.14 Million Against Nam Le

Hand #53: There is a dead button in seat 6, Ivey raises under the gun to 300,000, and Nam Le calls from the big blind. The flop comes Ad7d7s, Nam checks, Ivey bets 400,000, and Nam calls. There is already 1.54 million in the pot.

The turn card is the 6h, and both players check. The river card is the 10c, Nam checks, Ivey bets 800,000, and Nam thinks for about a minute before he calls.

Ivey shows 9-8 for a ten-high straight on the river, and Nam Le mucks. Phil Ivey wins the pot worth 3.14 million.
    -

Hand #54: Phil Ivey Wins a Pot Worth 1.84 Million Against Quinn Do

Hand #54: Quinn Do has the button in seat 1, he raises to 350,000, and Ivey calls from the big blind. The flop comes Kh9c4h, and both players check. The turn card is the Ac, Ivey checks, and they check again. The river card is the 8h, Ivey bets 500,000, and Quinn calls. Ivey shows Ah8d for two pair, aces and eights, and Quinn mucks. Phil Ivey picks up the pot worth 1.84 million.

    -

Hand #97: Nam Le Eliminated in 4th Place ($411,770)

Hand #97: Quinn Do has the button in seat 1, Nam Le raises from the small blind to 420,000, Ivey moves all in from the big blind, and Nam Le quickly calls with AdAh. Ivey shows 3c3h, and he'll need to improve to bust Nam here.

The flop comes 10s6s2d, Nam retains his huge lead in the hand. Someone in the crowd says, "Put an ace out there. End it!" Do you believe in jinxes?

The turn card is the -- 3d! The crowd reacts loudly as Ivey takes the lead with a set of threes. Nam Le needs an ace on the river to stay alive.

The river card is the Qd, and Ivey winst he pot with his set of threes, increasing his stack to more than 9 million.

Nam Le is eliminated in fourth place, earning $411,770.
    -

Hand #98: Woody Moore Eliminated in 3rd Place ($625,630)

Hand #98: There is a dead button in seat 2, Ivey completes the small blind for 160,000, and Moore checks his option. The flop comes 8h5h2d, Ivey bets 160,000, and Moore calls. The turn card is the 7s, Ivey bets 400,00, Moore moves all in, and Ivey quickly calls with 8d7c for two pair, eights and sevens. Moore shows 6h2s for an open-ended straight draw, and he needs a nine or a four to stay alive.

The river card is the Js, and Ivey wins the pot with his two pair. Woody Moore is eliminated in third place, earning $625,630.

There will be a short break before heads-up play begins

    Invincible?

It ain't over until the fat lady sings, but she may be warming up in the hall somewhere here at Commerce Casino. Ivey comes into the heads-up match with a 4-to-1 chip advantage, and he is widely regarded as the most intimidating heads-up competitor in poker. Don't count Quinn Do out though, he has a World Series of Poker gold bracelet, and a handful of tournament victories to his name. Do will need to make his move quick though if he hopes to even the odds against Ivey, and claim the $1.596 million first-place prize.

Hand #100: Phil Ivey Wins the WPT L.A. Poker Classic ($1,596,100)

Hand #100: Quinn Do has the button, he limps for 160,000, Ivey raises to 560,000, and Quinn calls. The flop comes As8s6s, Ivey bets 700,000, and Quinn thinks for about 30 seconds before he calls, leaving himself just 1.02 million behind. There is already 2.92 million in the pot.

The turn card pairs the board with the Ac, and Ivey moves all in. Quinn goes into the tank, shuffling his chips as he ponders the situation.

After four minutes, Quinn quietly says, "I call."

Ivey shows Ah8d for a full house, aces full of eights, and Quinn dejectedly shows 9h8h for two pair, aces and eights. No card can help Quinn here; he is drawing dead. (The meaningless river card is the 4c.)

Quinn Do is eliminated in second place, earning $909,400.

History is made as Phil Ivey wins the 2008 WPT L.A. Poker Classic, his first WPT title after reaching a record eight final tables. Ivey earns $1,596,100 and a huge trophy from the Commerce.
