Title: The Best & Worst of Layne Flack
Log: It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.

Layne Flack is having a hell of a day. He started strong, building up a nice stack early, and increasing it throughout the day to over $60,000, putting him in excellent shape throughout day one.

But with a fever recorded at 106, he tried to get out of playing today, asking for a switch to tomorrow (Day 1b) or Saturday (Day 1c) instead. His request was denied, and he was forced to play rather than give up his entry fee. Worse than that, he'd be giving up his one shot this year at the Main Event. And that's apparently not even an option for Mr. Flack.

He's doing what he can to get by, consuming orange juice and cold medicine, and fighting to stay alert. Whatever it is, it's working.

He has accumulated a big stack of chips, which can be mighty dangerous in the hands of Layne Flack. And if he survives today (which looks like a near certainty), he will have two days to rest up for day two.

Watch out for a fully rested Layne Flack.

              Title: Wide Open Spaces
Log: The huge tournament poker room at the Rio is a necessity; with a smaller space, it might require seven or eight "day ones" to accommodate this many players. Since the WSOP began five weeks ago, this space has served us very well, allowing plenty of room for three or four tournaments at once, with satellites and cash games along for the ride.

At the start of play today, it became even more important. Seemingly every inch of space was consumed by players, spectators and the media.

But that was then, this is now.

As the clock strikes midnight, we've lost over half of today's field, and the biggest poker tournament in history now takes up less than half of the room. It's an odd feeling, because you're suddenly reminded that there is existence outside of the Main Event.

There are no longer any satellites, as it's too late to join the party now. The cash games have fired back up in the usual area by the cashier's cage, and people are engrossed in their own games, as if history isn't taking place across the room.

But the room is starting to feel -- empty. It'll fill up again tomorrow, and this cycle will repeat for the next three days (Days 1b, 1c, and 2).

But when Monday (Day 3) rolls around, it'll be the first time the day starts at less than full capacity, and I expect it will be an odd feeling. (Will it be half full, or half empty? That's for you optimists and pessimists to decide for yourselves.)

For all of the capacity problems at Binion's last year, the tournament always felt "full." It started out well beyond capacity, with poker tables overtaking the Sports Book and wedged between slot machines. But as the field diminished, they moved the surviving players into Benny's Bullpen upstairs, providing a more intimate atmosphere for the final days.

In a deal with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, Harrah's has agreed to move the World Series back downtown to Binion's Horseshoe for the final two days of the Championship Event. It's a one-time deal in honor of the city's Centennial Celebration (Las Vegas turns 100 years old this year).

Some are excited about the final days at Binion's for the sake of tradition, while others prefer the atmosphere of an old gambling hall, which can't be replicated in a convention center. As for me, I think I'm just looking forward to having a big event in a relatively small room. It might seem counterintuitive at first, but the biggest event in poker history deserves that. It should feel packed to capacity, even when it's not; intensifying each and every bet, call, raise, and fold.

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 22:15:00
              Title: A Date With Destiny
Log: It's nearly a guarantee that somewhere in this room, somebody has a date with destiny to make history. Actually, there are probably a handful of somebodies. Their stories have yet to be told, because their stories have yet to unfold. But they're out there.

The story for day one tends to be about survival. There are other story angles, like how the professional players fare against the Internet qualifiers. But ultimately, if you don't survive Day One, you're not much of a story.

As the field size gets smaller, the stories will get bigger, deeper, and more interesting. That's where we start to delve into the background of the players as they become relative favorites to make the final table, learning about their poker background, their family, and the amazing tales of how they almost missed their flight to Vegas or nearly didn't qualify for the Big One.

With more media covering this event than any other poker tournament in history, you can be assured of one thing -- by the time the final nine players reach the final table, we will know every last detail about them. How they entered (sponsored, qualifying, or dropping ten grand), when they first learned to play poker, how often their aces held up (or were cracked), and even what they had for breakfast on Day One.

In a field of over 5,600 players, it would take an amazing amount of serendipity to find the best stories on day one. (Even if day one lasts three days.) But that's okay. The best stories need a little time to develop. Think of it like a fine wine, or, if that's too high class for you, think of it as a slow-cooked barbecue.

On day one, you'll have to be happy with chip counts, key hands, crazy costumes, and memorable quotes. As for the real stories of this year's Main Event, rest assured that the best is yet to come.

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 21:45:00
Title: At Least Seven Levels of Blinds Today
Log: With ten minutes left in Level 5, Tournament Director Johnny Grooms announced that play will continue through at least seven levels today, which would have the day's action ending about 2:00 am.

Here's the catch: The field has to be smaller than 650 players. If there are 700 players left at 2:00 am, they'll have to continue playing. The field needs to shrink enough that they can fit the survivors from Days 1a, 1b, and 1c into a single field on Sunday (Day Two).

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 20:45:00
              Title: Dealer Groupies?
Log: Two women from St. Louis, Missouri cautiously approached the final table during the dinner break, asking the dealer for an autograph. Yes, the dealer.

Laurie happily signed the autograph, and when I asked her, she said it wasn't even the first she has signed. We've all heard of poker groupies, but dealer groupies? It's just further proof that poker fans are eager for anything related to the World Series.

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 20:30:00
Title: Greg Raymer Still Going Strong
Log: With Greg "Fossilman" Raymer still in command at the ESPN TV table, ESPN is sticking with this table. They're getting some excellent footage of Raymer, entering the TV table with a short stack, and then climbing back out of the hole. A strong run by the defending champion (do we even dare to dream of a repeat?) would make an amazing story for ESPN's coverage.

Now Raymer just needs the cards to continue to cooperate. Stay tuned.

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 18:50:00
              Title: About the Dinner Break
Log: Earlier this week, there were rumors about no dinner break, and earlier today, there was discussion of a one-hour dinner break. But the announcement was made during this level that the players would receive a 75-minute dinner break, which should give them a little extra time to account for the crowds. The dinner break will begin right around 7:00 pm.

There are several excellent restaurants and buffets here at the Rio, but those players with friends or family setting up reservations or reserving seats have a definite advantage. For those players who don't want to walk the 5-10 minutes back to the main casino, there are a few basic food options available in the hallway outside the tournament room (cold sandwiches, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, chips, etc.).

Ten minutes before the break, Assistant Tournament Director Jack Effel is asking the spectators to clear the room so the players can exit the room quickly when their break begins.

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 17:30:00
              Title: Scenes From a Break
Log: Some interesting things about the 20-minute breaks between levels:

Apparently, some of the spectators don't fully understand what's going on. Now that quite a few tables have broken, the Rio has opened up some cash games. Once the bulk of the room clears out on break, quite a few spectators gravitate to the cash games and just continue watching, wondering why these players don't get a break.

There is no smoking in the tournament room. But in the hallway, it's open season on cigarettes, cigars, or whatever else someone happens to light up. During the twenty minute breaks, the air in the hallways is thick with haze and smoke. It seems more like L.A. smog than anything else.

The huge crowds of spectators were really slowing down the players as they went on their breaks, so after that first break, Tournament Director Johnny Grooms now asks all spectators to clear the room about ten minutes before the breaks begin, so the players can take full advantage of their breaks. Spectators can wait in the hallways for autographs, but it's also easier for players to avoid them there (if they're so inclined).

Another general rule for spectators: No flash photography in the tournament poker room.

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 16:45:00
Title: Tournament Director: "It's Been a Calm Day Today."
Log: I just bumped into Tournament Director Johnny Grooms between the tables, and even though he was smiling, I asked him if things were hectic. (Johnny Grooms is always smiling. He stopped for a moment and said, "You wouldn't believe it, but it's been a calm day today."

The biggest tournament in history (well over twice as big as last year's main event), and that just reaffirms what is already obvious: everything is running smoothly.

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 16:35:00
              Title: 155 Tables Remaining
Log: Play started today with the tournament room filled nearly to capacity, but now there are 45 empty tables. That leaves 155 tables in play, still playing ten-handed. So we're down below 1,550 players as we approach the end of Level 3.

A rough count shows about 30 women left in the field, which works out to about 2%. Perhaps Jennifer Tilly's well-publicized victory in the Ladies' Event this year will increase the percentage of female players for next year.

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 16:00:00
Title: Breaks, Elmo Masks, and "Official" Numbers
Log: As most of you know by now, the breaks have been extended to twenty minutes today due to the excessive crowds. The dinner break will happen after Level 4, which will occur just about 7:00 pm. No word yet on the length of the dinner break, but I'd expect it to last 75-90 minutes.

There is a player wearing an oversized Elmo mask at one of the tables. This is no cheap Halloween mask, but a full-sized muppet-quality headpiece. Apparently, somebody asked for a ruling whether or not it was legal, and it was determined that as long as a player's face was visible, it would be allowed. Elmo's "mouth" is where the player looks out, and while there is a dark mesh, his face is still visible. So for the time being, the mask is being allowed. But if you've ever talked to someone who worked a theme park in costume (think Disneyland), it's not a pleasant experience for long periods of time. He'll probably get bored of the gimmick long before dinnertime.

The official numbers that we've reported earlier (5,661 total players) are still unofficial, until they've been announced later in the day, along with the prize pool. That number represents the total number of registrants, but that number will decrease slightly for administrative reasons. Administrative reasons can include anything from duplicate entries to refunds (such as someone who was hospitalized). When the official numbers are announced, expect the number to be slightly lower.

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 15:25:00
              Title: A New "Featured" Table
Log: Once Jennifer Harman was eliminated from the featured table on the ESPN stage, it's days were numbered. During the break, the table was switched out for a new one featuring Greg Raymer, who is defending his World Championship.

While ESPN is recording every detail, from the hole cards to the player's comments, it is not very spectator friendly setup without an announcer.

              Date / Time: 2005-07-07 13:50:00
              Title: Official Numbers
Log: I just returned from the cashier's cage with the official numbers on this year's Main Event. These numbers were taken directly off their computer screen:

              Total Number of Entrants: 5,661

              Day 1a Players: 1,885

              Day 1b Players: 1,878

              Day 1c Players: 1,898

The players who registered after the event started today were just as likely to be randomly placed in today's field (Day 1a) as they were Friday (Day 1b) or Saturday (Day 1c).

This is clearly the largest live tournament in history, but it is not a sellout. Harrah's was prepared for a full 6,600 players, plus alternates. Score one for excellent planning on Harrah's part. Even though a sellout sounds impressive, it means that people were excluded from the event.

We now know that there will be $56,610,000 worth of chips in play. So as you glance over the chip counts for the next few days, keep in mind that while $100,000 or $200,000 might be a lot of chips at the start of Day 2, it's a long way from winning the tournament.

              Title: The Quiet Has Returned
Log: Once everyone has settled back into their seats after the break, the room has quieted back down. It's odd that with well over 2,000 people in the room (players, spectators, and media), the loudest sound is coming from the chips. I don't expect this quiet to last as long as it did in the first round, but it's interesting that it returned after the first break.

              Title: The Room Gets Louder
Log: In an interesting display of human nature, the room has gotten steadily louder throughout the first level. Apparently the eery quiet evident at the start was just a temporary condition.

Actually, the reasons aren't that mysterious. At the start of play, the spectators were riveted by the action. But as they slowly realized that watching poker live wasn't the same as watching it on TV, boredom set in and they started talking and wandering around a bit. Meanwhile, at the tables, many of the players started talking amongst themselves, breaking the ice as they become more familiar with each other.

Title: Registration Still Open For 55 Minutes
Log: Tournament Director Johnny Grooms has just made an announcement that registration will be open for another 55 minutes. (Until about 12:50 pm, or twenty minutes before the first level of blinds comes to an end.) Anyone with $10,000 burning a hole in their pocket and dreams of making history (along with nearly $10 million), should rush down to the Rio right away.

Title: "One Down, 5,800 to go ..."
Log: It started with a smattering of applause in the far corner of the tournament room, slowly building as the news spread. Then Tournament Director Johnny Grooms made an announcement that the first player had been eliminated from the tournament. "One down, 5,800 to go." The time was 11:20 am, costing that player a $1,000 a minute for his time spent in the tournament.

We don't have official numbers on the size of the field, but you won't find many sources better than the tournament director, so 5,800 players should be fairly accurate. We'll pass on the official numbers as soon as they become available.

              Title: Eerily Quiet
Log: The tournament room at the Rio was packed to capacity for Event #2, with every table filled to capacity. Somehow, they've managed to pack in far more people today. Not players, but spectators. The aisles are packed with railbirds, making it nearly impossible to get around the room. If that weren't bad enough, even the playing area is much more packed than usual, as media from around the World has swarmed to cover the Championship Event.

Of course, CardPlayer.com has been here from the beginning, and our experience will really pay off in the best World Series coverage available anywhere. We have a proven team of reporters spread throughout the room, providing the most comprehensive, up-to-date coverage.

The room was buzzing with energy before play began, and it was quite loud. But once the announcement to put the cards in the air was made, the room became eerily quiet, with just the clicking of the chips, reminiscent of crickets on a summer evening.

Title: Two Thousand People, Ten Minutes Late
Log: Tournament Director Johnny Grooms kicked off the event with a few announcements, and then there was a draw for the button, which wound up in seat 9. There was a mock from a few players, as the people in seat 9 started their days off with a lucky omen. But starting with $10,000 in chips, and with the blinds at $25-$50, there is plenty of room to play on day one.

At precisely 11:10 am, it was time to shuffle up and deal!

                  updates

As the second flight of the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em championship was getting underway, a player was overheard asking, "Is this limit (hold'em)?"

                  HEAT 2

                  let's move

                  Title: Major Elimination

The aforementioned woman, who had won her seat online and never played in a live game before, has somehow managed to be eliminated. :joker

                  Title: Sammy Farha
Log: 2003 Main Event runner-up Sammy Farha has already built his stack to $34,300.

                  Unul din favoritii mei!

Title: Ladies and Gentlemen Mr. Phil Hellmuth

The man without an alarm clock, Phil Hellmuth, has arrived on the scene. This is Hellmuth's last chance this year to tie Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson for most world series bracelets all time.

                  Title: Tobey Maguire Eliminated

With the flop showing Kc-Qc-8c, Tobey Maguire and Young Phan fire bets and raises and reraises back and forth at one another until finally Maguire says "I'm all-in." Phan, apparently looking to be refunded the $8.99 he spent on seeing "Pleasantville" on Spectra-Vision at the Ramada in Tunica, calls. Maguire shows K-K, while Phan shows A-A (one is a club). The turn is the 10d, keeping Maguire ahead, but the river is the 2c, giving Phan the nut flush and sending Maguire to Ride with The Devil.

Title: Daniel Negreanu Takes Center Stage
Log: Daniel Negreanu is sitting at the featured table, and he's below average in chips. But he has plenty of fans in the crowd, including actress Shannon Elizabeth.

He just knocked out one of his featured tablemates, with A-Q of hearts against the other guy's Q-J of clubs. The flop of Qs-7c-5s gave them the same pair, but Negreanu's kicker still had him in the lead. The turn card is the Kc, giving his opponent a flush draw, and Negreanu is not the favorite he once was. But the 5d on the river completes the hand, and he knocks out a player who has nothing but a great story about losing to Daniel Negreanu at ESPN's featured table.

Title: Update From the Featured Table
Log: The breaks are the only time we have to get accurate chip counts from the featured table. Sam Farha leads the table with $42,575, while Daniel Negreanu is in a deep hole with just $1,100 in chips. The blinds are increasing to $100-$200, so Negreanu will have to make a move very soon.

We saw a lot of big comebacks yesterday. Will Daniel Negreanu be able to add his name to that list?

Title: Joe Awada Has Left the Building
Log: Joe Awada has been eliminated from today's Championship event.

Title: A Deep, Deep Hole for Daniel
Log: Daniel Negreanu is at the featured table with a single chip left -- one pink $500 chip. He's doing some one-chip tricks, which are pretty much limited to twirling it between his fingers.

                  Title: Daniel Negreanu Eliminated
Log: It didn't take long for Daniel Negreanu to toss his last $500 chip into the pot and declare "All in." He has multiple callers, and he's so short-stacked that he shouldn't be surprised by further action after the flop.

The action is hard to follow with a limited view of the ESPN table (the monitors are focused on Daniel's face rather than the action), but the player in seat 2 ultimately shows down the winning hand for the side pot, and Negreanu isn't able to beat it. Daniel Negreanu has just been eliminated from this year's World Series.

Daniel Negreanu is pulled aside for an exit interview by ESPN, and he's still smiling even after a disappointing finish. He then goes over to his friends and supporters for a few words before being pulled back into ESPN's backstage area, perhaps for a longer interview.

                  Title: Brunson Killed by Bullets
Log: Todd Brunson (fiul lui Doyle) is no longer with us today, he has been eliminated from today's Championship event. Todd Brunson made it $600 to go and was re-raised by his opponent. Brunson came back over the top and pushed all in. His opponent called and the cards were turned over. Brunson was holding A-Q and his opponent showed pocket Aces. The board bricked out and Todd Brunson was eliminated.

Title: Men Proves Why He Is the "Master"
Log: Before the flop, Men Nguyen made it $500 to go and the player in the small blind re-raised to $1,500. Nguyen pushed all in and was called by his opponent. The Master showed pocket Queens and his opponent showed A-K. Nguyen smiled when he saw the flop had come K-Q-2. The turn was a 10 and the river was 3. The Master's set of Queens held up and doubled the size of his chip stack.

Title: Men "The Master" Nguyen is out
Log: A short stacked ($600) Men "The Master" Nguyen was just busted out after he pushed all in pre-flop from first position with A-10. Chuck Thompson called with pocket jacks and Men's day is over after a K-J-4-4-8 board gives Thompson the full house (jacks full of fours).

                  Title: Eliminations
Log: Evelyn Ng was eliminated by Garry Bush after his J-J held up against Evelyn's 8-8. Michael Gracz and Eli Elezra have also traded in their seats for a stroll through the venue's crowded halls.

Title: Eric Sagstrom rolling in his first WSOP
Log: Eric Sagstrom, playing in his first WSOP final event, has been slowly building up his chip stack all day. He is now sitting with about $37,000 in chips.

                  Title: Featured Table Update
Log: Phil Hellmuth is still running strong, and he's up over $47,000 in chips at the featured table. There haven't been any fireworks, and everyone at the table seems to be comfortable and relaxed.

                  Title: David Williams Eliminated
Log: David Williams didn't last too long following the dinner break.

Title: David Sklansky Scoops a Pot
Log: Following a flop of Ah-10h-9h, David Sklansky and two other players were in the hand. One opponent made it $1,000 to go and Sklansky and the other player called. The turn was the Ad. The same player bet out $1,000 and both Sklansky and the other player called again. The river was the King of spades and the same player bet out $2,000. Again, both Sklansky and the other opponent called and turned their cards over. Opponent #1, who was betting out, was holding K-10, showing two pair. Opponent #2 turned over 3h-2h and showed a flush. SKlansky turned over the Qh-8h, representing the higher flush, and taking the pot.

                  Title: Players Are on Break
Log: The players are now on a 15 minute break and when they return the blinds will be at $250-$500 and a $50 ante. There are only 80 tables left with about 800 players at them.

After a period where Sammy Farha fell from being one of the chip leaders, he has made an aggressive move. Heads up with his opponent, Rick Barabino, Farha pushed all in after seeing a flop of Jh-9c-7h and a turn card of 10c. Barabino called and turned over K-J. Farha threw down pocket 8's, giving him the straight. The river was a 4 and Barabino was forced to push his chips into Farha's pile. Sammy Farha now has about $90,000 in chips.

After a hand at the featured table, Phil Hellmuth jumped out of his chair and pointed at his wife in the stands.

"Honey! Honey! That was the hand! I should have gone broke on the hand!"

He then described how he had A-K, the flop came out A-A-4, and restated that he should have gone broke.

"Except you forgot one thing -- I can dodge bullets, baby. I knew he had a full house!"

                  Title: Remaining Players
Log: There are currently 72 tables which means less than 720 people remain.

A player at table 130 just politely asked the cocktail waitress for a banana. The waitress responded "no, but I think I can get you some peanut M&M's." The player responded, "I would really love a banana." Hearing this, Young Phan picked up an old banana peel from the floor and threw it at the player and said "Here's your banana!", all the while laughing hysterically.

On a break from the ESPN featured table, Phil Hellmuth took a leisurely walk around the rest of the tournament area. Walking by Paul Wolfe's table, the two got into a friedly conversation. Towards the end, when Phil was making his way back to the featured table, Wolfe yelled out, "You gonna win?". To which Hellmuth replied, "Win!?! I'm trying to make it to the end of the day!."

                    Title: Phil Hellmuth Eliminated
Log: Phil Hellmuth had a horrible hour at the featured table. He was finally all in with Ad-Qh against Paul "X-22" Magriel's pocket sevens (7h-7d). The crowd was mixed in their support, with some rooting for Phil, and some against him. (Oddly enough, nobody seemed to be for Magriel, just against Hellmuth.)

It was a race situation as the flop came Jc-9h-4c. Hellmuth didn't improve, and was now drawing pretty thin, needing to catch a queen, an ace, or a runner-runner straight to stay alive. The turn card paired the board with the 9s, and the river card was the 5d. Phil Hellmuth, who had an excellent day on Friday, had the bottom drop out after midnight, and was eliminated from the Main Event.

As he was leaving, he said to his wife, "That was the worst hour of poker in my life." The way he said it made it unclear whether he was referring to the cards or the players.

Uite, Farha joaca bine an de an... imi pare rau ca a pierdut in 2003.
Moneymaker a recunoscut ca nu stie de pot odds... deci e clar.

"I have never read any books about poker and don't really consider myself to be one of those players who analyze the pot odds down to the Nth degree. However, I do take the chances of improving my hand into consideration."
