DEALER MUCKS IT UP
$100,000-plus winning hand discarded.
We've heard of players mucking the winning hand because someone bet and they folded, or they thought they’d lost the hand. But we’ve never heard of the dealer mucking the winning hand. Until now, that is. And this wasn’t in a local casino’s £20 re-buy tournament, either – this was at the Mandalay Bay World Poker Tour Championship in Las Vegas.
Midway through day two fo the $10,000 championship event, with a board of A♣ 6♦ 3♦ 3♣ 2♣, David Oppenheim made a bet of $20,000 into a $60,000 pot. His only opponent in the pot, John Smith, moved all-in for a total of $56,000, and Oppenheim made the call. Smith showed A♠ 2♠ and Oppenheim flipped A♥ K♥. At this point, the dealer mistakenly mucked Oppenheim’s hand, believing that Smith had won the pot with A-A and 2-2. However, Smith’s pair of Twos were counterfeited by the pair of Threes on the board, meaning that Oppenheim and Smith both had two pair (Aces and Threes), and bringing Oppenheim’s King kicker into play.
Upon realizing the mistake, the dealer pulled the cards back out and Oppenheim took the pot down.
